The Route 78 tram is a Chapel Street icon – but it’s suffering from decades of neglect.
Legally, 100% of tram stops were supposed to be accessible by the end of 2022 – but as of today, exactly 0% of Route 78 stops are.
Meanwhile, the trams themselves are all high-floor models from the 80s. They’re small, there’s no air conditioning, and the requirement for everyone to clamber up the stairs makes getting on and off a difficult and slow affair – which means more time sitting at the stop and less time moving forward.
All of this makes for a route that is totally inaccessible to people in wheelchairs, very difficult for people with prams or lots of shopping, and less than ideal for everyone else.
Melburnians love our trams – it’s time we showed it.
