Animals should be treated with compassion, not cruelty.
The Greens will always push the government to go further and faster on animal rights and ending cruelty. We will hold them to account when they fail to do so.
Establish and independent authority for animal welfare
The interests of animals can’t be in the same hands as the authority for the industries that profit from them.
We need a separate authority to monitor and protect the rights of animals
End intensive animal farming
There’s nothing natural about factory farms. Animals in factory farms are unable to express their natural behaviors, and are subjected to cruel, painful procedures like debeaking (hens) and tail docking (piglets). It’s Greens’ policy to phase out intensive animal farming.
The Greens also want to see battery cages phased out in Victoria well before the 2036 national deadline, and the banning of sow stalls, debeaking and other cruel practices.
Implement recommendations of the pig welfare inquiry
The 2024 Parliamentary Inquiry into pig welfare in Victoria made 18 recommendations to improve the welfare of pigs in Victorian farms. We’re calling on the government to implement them all.
