GREENS WINS FOR RENTERS
- Banned no grounds evictions so renters can’t get kicked out for no reason. Whether you’re month-to-month or on a fixed term, your landlord now has to provide a proper reason to ask you to leave.
- Banned rental bidding to make finding a home fairer. This means that a real estate agent or landlord can’t ask for or accept more than the advertised amount.
- Secured mandatory electric heating and cooling for new rental leases starting next year, and existing rentals by 2031.
- Improved minimum standards to make rentals more energy efficient, so renters pay less to heat and cool their home by draught proofing, ensuring all homes have ceiling insulation and replacing gas heaters and hot water tanks with electric at end of life.
- Extended notice to vacate so now your landlord has to give you 90 days (up from 60 days) to move you out (if they have a proper reason) or to raise your rent.
- Banned hidden fees & privacy invasions so real estate agents and third-party apps can’t charge you fees to pay rent or get a background check and they won’t be able to ask you invasive questions just to apply for a rental.
- Making more homes available for renters and first home buyers by regulating AirBnB and taxing empty homes. If you live in an apartment, your owners corp can now vote to ban short stays.
